Morton)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"edn_subTitle\">AUTO VOLUMES NEAR 650,000 UNITS<\/h2>\n<p class=\"meta_text no_margin\">Tuesday, July 30, 2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"clear_content\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"main_content\">\n<p><b>SAVANNAH, Ga.,\u00a0<\/b><b>July 30, 2019\u00a0\u2013<\/b>\u00a0The Port of Savannah moved a record 4.5 million twenty-foot equivalent container units in the fiscal year that ended June 30, an increase of more than 305,000 TEUs, or 7.3 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ports are firing on all cylinders,\u201d said Governor Brian Kemp. \u201cThis success is a testament to the men and women who work throughout our entire supply chain and make a difference for Georgia and the nation every day. Because of their commitment, our factories, farms and logistics providers are creating opportunity and prosperity in every corner of our state.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For the first time ever, GPA handled more than half a million container lifts to rail, growing that number by more than 72,000, or 16.6 percent. The 506,707 intermodal boxes constituted more than 20 percent of total containers, another record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Authority\u2019s investment in the Mason Mega Rail project is coming just in time for our capacity to stay ahead of demand, ensuring the free flow of intermodal cargo,\u201d said Will McKnight, GPA\u2019s Board Chairman. \u201cThe first phase of the project will be complete this year, cutting rail transit time to Midwestern markets by 24 hours.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mason Mega Rail project, which will double Savannah\u2019s rail capacity and create the largest on-terminal intermodal facility in North America, is 40 percent complete. By 2021, the new facility will be able to handle 1 million containers per year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team on the terminal \u2013 GPA employees, the International Longshoremen\u2019s Association, and our two Class 1 rail providers, CSX and Norfolk Southern \u2013 are moving more freight faster and more efficiently than ever before in our history,\u201d said Griff Lynch, GPA\u2019s Executive Director. \u201cRail cargo is expanding at twice the rate of our overall container trade, reducing congestion on our highways and increasing Georgia\u2019s reach to a mid-American arc of cities, including Chicago, St. Louis and Columbus, Ohio.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the Port of Brunswick, 613,680 autos and machinery units crossed the docks at Colonel\u2019s Island Terminal, GPA\u2019s main port for the import-export of cars, trucks and tractors. Roll-on\/Roll-off cargo grew by 4 percent at Colonel\u2019s Island in FY2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrunswick\u2019s proximity to dealerships across the region, the ease of doing business in Georgia and the room to grow at Colonel\u2019s Island are a winning combination,\u201d Lynch said. \u201cNo other Ro\/Ro port in the nation can match Brunswick\u2019s 400 acres of expansion space.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Terminal in Savannah added another 35,884 vehicles for a total of nearly 650,000 units moved through Georgia\u2019s ports.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At East River Terminal in Brunswick, terminal operator Logistec moved 1.2 million tons of bulk cargo in FY2019, an increase of 203,000 tons, or 20 percent. The improvement was largely associated with an increase in wood pellets, peanut pellets and perlite.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During its July 29 meeting, the GPA board approved increases to accommodate record growth.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At GPA\u2019s Garden City Terminal, the nation\u2019s third busiest container gateway, a $12.4 million project to construct four new container rows will increase annual capacity by approximately 400,000 twenty-foot equivalent container units.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0At GPA\u2019s Colonel\u2019s Island Terminal in Brunswick, Ga., the single largest auto terminal in North America, a $1.7 million project to add four additional acres to the 662-acre facility will add an estimated 600 processing spaces for new and expanding business.<i>\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Find print-quality images of port operations\u00a0<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gaports.com\/Media\/Photography\/tabid\/738\/AlbumID\/2404-51\/Default.aspx\"><i>here<\/i><\/a><i>. Georgia\u2019s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 439,000 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $25 billion in income, $106 billion in revenue and $2.9 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia\u2019s economy.
