Port of Savannah welcomes largest ship ever to call East Coast

Savannah, Ga., May 10, 2017 – Please join the Georgia Ports Authority and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal at a welcome ceremony on Friday, May 12, for the COSCO Development – the largest vessel ever to call on the U.S. East Coast.

 

Deal will be joined by GPA Board Chairman Jimmy Allgood and GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.

 

With a capacity of 13,092 twenty-foot equivalent container units, the Development measures 1,201 feet long and 158 feet wide.

 

Media are invited to hear comments and view the COSCO Development as GPA’s massive cranes move cargo on and off the vessel. Due to the nature of this event, we ask that all media arrive at the GPA Administration building, 2 Main Street, Garden City, Ga., no later than 11:30 a.m. on May 12, 2017.

 

Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals support more than 369,000 jobs throughout the state annually and contribute $20.4 billion in income, $84.1 billion in revenue and $2.3 billion in state and local taxes to Georgia’s economy. The Port of Savannah handled 8.2 percent of the U.S. containerized cargo volume and 10.3 percent of all U.S. containerized exports in CY2015.

Welcome ceremony for container ship COSCO Development

When:

Arrive no later than 11:30 a.m. to access the terminal for the event at noon, Friday, May 12
 

Where:

GPA Administration Building, 2 Main Street, Garden City, GA, 31408. Transportation will be provided to the on-terminal event site.

 

From Downtown Savannah

Take West Bay Street to I-516/S.R. 21 North. Turn right onto on-ramp for I-516/S.R. 21 North. Proceed about a mile, then take Exit 8. Bear to the right, toward traffic signal at Main Street.  Turn left at traffic signal onto Main Street, proceeding to the intersection at Bourne Avenue. Go through the Bourne Ave. intersection, turning right into the circular drive at GPA Administration Building.
